Candle & Candle Holder Styling With Fire Safety First

Candles in stable holders on a clear heat-resistant stone tray

Style candles and holders while keeping flames supervised, stable and clear of curtains, upholstery, décor, children, pets and draughts.

Candles add warmth and movement, but an open flame is not an ordinary decorative object. Styling decisions must follow the candle and holder instructions, maintain a clear area around the flame and keep the candle supervised from lighting to extinguishing.

For homes with children, pets, draughts or crowded surfaces, flameless alternatives can provide a similar visual layer without an open flame.

Quick answer: Use a stable, heat-resistant holder sized for the candle on a clear, level surface. Keep it away from curtains, flowers, books, upholstery, draughts, children and pets; never leave it burning unattended, and maintain working smoke alarms.

Read both candle and holder instructions

Confirm the holder is intended for the candle type and size. Tea lights, pillars and tapers have different heat, wax and stability behaviour. Do not improvise a decorative vessel as a candle holder.

Choose from candles and holders as compatible products, then retain all safety labels and burn instructions.

Create a clear flame zone

Remove paper, dried or artificial flowers, foliage, fabric, books and loose decorations from around and above the flame. Account for curtains moving in a draught and people reaching across the table.

Never place candles on or near heaters. The CFA reported a 2026 Victorian incident in which a decorative wax candle left on a wood heater melted and ignited.

Use a stable, suitable surface

Place the holder on a level, heat-resistant surface where it cannot be knocked. Protect the furniture according to both the candle and furniture-care instructions. Do not carry a burning candle or move it while wax is liquid.

On a dining table, keep the flame away from sleeves, serving activity and children. A low arrangement may protect conversation sightlines but still needs a clear radius.

Supervise and extinguish correctly

Stay in the room and keep the flame in view. Extinguish candles before leaving, sleeping or when the instructions say the remaining wax is too low to burn safely. Use the recommended extinguishing method and check that the wick is no longer glowing.

Keep matches and lighters secured away from children. Do not rely on a candle for emergency lighting.

Maintain smoke alarms and an exit plan

Candle styling is not a substitute for fire preparedness. Victoria requires smoke alarms, and fire services recommend working alarms and a practised home escape plan. Follow current CFA and Fire Rescue Victoria guidance.

For a no-flame table arrangement, use decorative objects or suitable flameless lights, keeping battery products and button cells secure according to their instructions.

Before you buy: practical checklist

  • Candle and holder confirmed compatible.
  • Stable heat-resistant surface used.
  • Clear area above and around every flame maintained.
  • Curtains, upholstery, flowers and paper removed.
  • An adult remains present and attentive.
  • Working smoke alarms and household escape plan maintained.

Frequently asked questions

Can candles sit beside artificial flowers?

Keep open flames and heat well away from artificial or dried flowers and other combustible décor. Use a flameless candle when the arrangement cannot maintain a clear zone.

Is a decorative bowl safe for a candle?

Only if the product is specifically designed and instructed for that candle use. Decorative vessels can crack, overheat or become unstable.

Can a candle be left burning while I am in another room?

No. Keep a burning candle within sight and extinguish it before leaving the room, going to sleep or when supervision cannot be continuous.
